When is Open Enrollment for Health Insurance 2022?

Open Enrollment 2022 begins Monday, November 1, 2021 to Saturday, January 15, 2022. Enroll by December 15, 2021 for coverage that begins January 1, 2022.

What information will I need in order to enroll in a Health Insurance Plan for 2022?

Each enrollee needs the following information if enrolling in a plan through the exchange:

  • Name, address, email address, social security number, birthday, and citizenship status.

  • Household size and income

  • Coverage details and premium for any employer-sponsored plans, regardless of your enrollment status.

  • Payment Info

  • Doctors Names and Zip Codes - To check if In-Network

  • A list of the individual or families medications

When will my 2022 Health Insurance Plan Start?

If you sign up during the open enrollment period in the fall of 2021. January 1, 2022, is the date health coverage will take effect in most cases.

It is possible to get coverage before the start of 2022, If you enroll during the open enrollment period but you also have a qualifying event. Qualifying events include having a baby, loss of a job with benefits, lost coverage, moving, etc.

A December 1 start date is possible with the qualifying event under the special enrollment period, whereas a January 1 effective date is typical if enrolled under the normal open enrollment period rules.

What happens if you miss Open Enrollment?

If you don’t enroll in an ACA-compliant health insurance plan by the end of open enrollment (January 15, 2022 in most states), your buying options will be limited until the next open enrollment starts in the fall of 2022.

However, there are various options for obtaining coverage, even after open enrollment ends. The private market has no enrollment period all year round if you qualify.
